Built Works Director Will Gowland is a Certified Passive House Designer and the practice is an advocate for the use of low energy, biogenic materials and principals.

How we work

We consider buildings to be a part of the natural environment we live in. To this end, we combine ecosystems with built systems, to create environments that promote a sustainable relationship with our planet. We are passionate about building conservation and retrofit projects, advocating that the most environmentally friendly building is an existing one. By combining cutting edge technology with indiginous knowledge and local materials we create new vernacular spaces to live, work and play.

A Cornish Barn.


A new build holiday home in the Cornish countryside.


Higher Bakesdown Barn is a new-build family holiday home designed in the spirit of the traditional Cornish barn. The design draws on the simplicity and honesty of local agricultural buildings, using robust materials such as charred timber cladding, corrugated metal, and stone to create a contemporary yet rooted aesthetic. Large windows and sliding doors open the interiors to the surrounding countryside, framing expansive views and connecting daily life to the rhythms of the landscape. The barn form provides a familiar rural silhouette, reinterpreted with refined detailing to create a warm, sustainable, and characterful retreat for family gatherings and holidays.

The barn’s material palette reflects the simplicity of local agricultural buildings: charred timber cladding, black corrugated roofing, robust engineering brick, and stone-filled gabion walls. Durable and unpretentious, these elements are both functional and atmospheric, grounding the home in its rural setting while giving a contemporary edge to the traditional barn form.

NSPF Scale exhibition &#38;amp; festival
September 2025

We are super proud to be one of the practices that make up the NSPF and feature in their Scale festival running through October.
The Northwest Small Practice Forum is made up of disruptive practices throughout the Northwest. 
Scale features some incredible work by small practices - the point is small does not mean inexperienced or less well-designed when compared to large multidisciplinary practice. The forum members support one another and collaborate as a network to expand the reach of this talented group of architects and designers.

Barnaby.Flagship Store in Covent Garden

	
Barnaby’s first chocolate shop in Covent Garden was designed to establish a distinctive identity rooted in the history of British chocolate making. Working closely with Tom Morris of Morrisstudio and the client, we developed a concept that reflects the brand’s values of craft and authenticity. Every element was handmade, from the bespoke solid oak shopfront with traditional tusk-and-tenon joints, to the interior finishes that showcase the chocolate as carefully as jewellery. We collaborated with Common Objects to produce hand-made tiles in our Kendal workshop, refining the geometry, colours, and textures to create a richly tactile, contemporary retail environment.

Inspired by Arts and Crafts traditions, we designed the Barnaby shopfront to emphasise honesty in construction and handcrafted detail. Formed from 75x75mm solid oak profiles, the robust framework continues inside to shape the cabinetry and panelling, creating a unified material language. Fabricated by K&#38;amp;D Joinery, the solid oak construction highlights natural character and craftsmanship, providing a warm, enduring backdrop that reflects the care and quality at the heart of Barnaby’s handmade chocolate.

Process.


We collaborated with Morristudio to design a bespoke tiled floor that would ground the Barnaby store in texture, geometry, and craft. Together we explored patterns, proportions, and extensive sampling of colours and finishes to achieve the right balance of richness and restraint. The tiles were then hand-made in our Kendal studio with Common Objects, allowing us to refine every detail of the surface. The result is a unique floor that embodies Barnaby’s ethos of artistry and authenticity.

Cumberland Road

	
Enhancing the character of the existing building and upgrading the environmental performance of the building as a whole is a core part of the brief. The external envelope is to be repaired and redecorated to ensure the building has a positive impact on the wider
townscape.


The proposals also seeks to dramatically improve the environmental performance of the house and decrease the energy requirements of it. External insulation and a substantially improved roof will improve thermal performance.

Drying Shed Sauna

	Architect’s Holiday Woodland Sauna

The Drying Shed sauna is located on a farm in the High Weald AONB. Inspired by Scandinavian sauna culture, it provides a meditative experience for guests staying in two Built Works-designed eco-cabins on the same site, run by Architects Holiday - an online platform for architect-designed holiday-lets.


Tucked into a clearing, the sauna’s compact design uses the site’s sloping topography and dense woodland to prevent overlooking from the cabins and immerse guests into nature.

The interior is clad with alder panelling to match the alder trees that surround it - blurring the lines between inside and out. The off-grid sauna uses a wood-burning stove with authentic Finish sauna stones, and guests are invited to tend to the fire, as they relax and shape their own sauna ritual. The wood for fuel is sourced from the site itself and the neighbouring woodland, while the sauna bench within was constructed by hand from a silver birch tree trunk, creating a natural and organic form to counter the geometries form of the sauna. From here, guests can admire tranquil views of the wider unspoilt countryside, via a large picture window that brings the outside in.

Drawings &#38;amp; Models.
	

The design references historic, local agricultural drying sheds, drawing a light-hearted parallel between both uses. This can be seen in its simple form and finish, where the distinct larch shingles are arranged in a repeating panel pattern to emphasise their textured finish and the variation found in nature. Beautiful timber corner details offer a nod to visible façade mechanisms on traditional drying sheds, and double as a storage solution for robes.

AA Lecture Hall.Conservation led upgrades


Built Works have lead a project to refurbish key facilities at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in central London. Fundamentally this has included improving the energy efficiency of the school; both in terms of reducing energy use, as well as the efficiency of how energy is used on the premises. We are a part of the AA Low Carbon Future initiative. Both the Lecture Hall and Library are to be upgraded to meet the modern demands of students, whilst enhancing the historic building fabric and the AA's history in the Grade-I Listed Building on Bedford Square.&#38;nbsp;

Lecture HallThe AA Lecture Hall has hosted Lloyd Wright, Corbusier, Hadid, Kuma, Koolhaas, Ingels, Gormley, Tschumi, the list goes on. However, it is used every day by staff and students for seminars, presentations, crits, parties, exhibitions and concerts. It is often the first room a student will enter when they start at the AA to attend their induction, and could be the room where they present their final submissions before leaving. It is a space that defines time at the AA. In many ways it is a fast space; changing continuously through the days and weeks of a term, but it is also a constant as a venue for architectural and cultural exchange and dissemnation of knowledge. 
As technology has advanced over the years it has been incorporated into the Lecture Hall in an ad-hoc way. Lighting, projection, loudspeakers, cameras, microphones have all progressed in iterations that have been installed, then removed and inevitable obsolescence required replacement. Built Works proposals remove the buildup of 
ad-hoc installations to reveal more of the character of the Georgian space and streamline the lighting, audio, visual and recording installations to allow rapid transition between uses; the lecture hall is transformed to a seminar room to an exhibition gallery at the flick of a button.

	As the Lecture Hall is a busy and well booked space, the majority of the works were designed to be fabricated off site. Ceiling "rafts" contain power and data distributions as well as discrete rails for flying flexible lighting and camera positions, as well as acoustic treatments to imporve the sound quality of the room. These pre-fabricated rafts also require minimal intervention to the historic fabric with small and reversible mechanical connections to the historic structure of the school.
