Jouberton Nursery School

Project Joubert, a pre-school nursery built in Jouberton Township, South Africa. Constructed from a series of timber trusses that modulate in pitch to create a playful and undulating roof, it provides space for 4 classrooms, toilets and a kitchen, with a covered walk way to provide protection from the harsh African sun. Located in the southern hemisphere, its south facing clerestory windows provide a high level of indirect natural daylight whilst minimising solar heat gain to reduce lighting and electric costs. All materials for the project were locally sourced and the corrugated roofing materials were chosen to match its surrounding context.
